Story Hangover Thoughts: Ever After High VS Descendants

Have you ever noticed that after someone comes up with an original idea, ten minutes later, they have a million copycats?

Take Ever After High and Disney’s Descendants for example. Ever After came first and was at the peak of its fame when Disney decided that they wanted a piece of the action. So, what do they do? They change a few things like the names of the characters and a few pieces of plot line and claim it’s their idea.

Let’s see; children of fairy tales? Check. Attending a boarding school where everyone thinks they’ll be just like their parents, especially the villains? Check. Main characters including children of Sleeping Beauty, Mad Hatter, and Evil Queen? Check.

I don’t know how this didn’t get Disney Channel sued by Mattel. It only got so popular because they used popular teen actors and were basically riding the coattails of Ever After High and Kenny Ortega’s reputation from High School Musical.  And of course, since Disney Channel “Original” Movies get advertised nonstop, its popularity got EAH canceled because they couldn’t compete with their own rip-off.

Now we’ll never know if the Hood-BadWolf family ever revealed their secret, (no, I will not just tell you what it is. They have the right to their privacy), or if Bunny Blanc and Alistair Wonderland ever got together! And thanks to Regal Academy, it’s even more unlikely.

I don’t blame Iginio Straffi because he stopped when the show’s popularity went down and realized that the shows he already had would get him far enough. I should know, I’m a long-time fan of his work. I only blame Disney Channel Original Movies because the rest of Disney had nothing to do with it.

If you’re wondering about Hotel Transylvania and Monster High, that’s another story. Yes, they’re still families of famous monsters, but at least they mixed it up enough, so Monster High didn’t get ruined until they rebooted the whole franchise.

And what about people who basically live through their kids? You know the type. The kind of people who either never accomplished anything so they force their children to do it for them because they get fame by association or who want to keep their august family’s name crystal clear no matter what it takes. I bring this point up because I find it extremely unfair.
